1801A: Intro into Music Education
Who I Am: My name is Haley Fine and currently I am a student at Western University gaining my Bachelor of Arts with a specialization in Honors music. I play the Alto, Tenor, Baritone Saxophone, and the Guitar. As well as I am learning to play the piano. Music education is a big part of who I am as well as who I want to become. My hopes for my education is to use what I will learn and apply it to my dream of teaching music at a high school level.
1. Original Message: Hey Haley! Watching your video was so informative and fun! It was very personal and enjoyable to watch. You mentioned that "welcome to the jungle" was your favourite band pieces, why was this? Could these reasons be applied to your future when you are picking repertoire for student? What draws you to want to teach music and science? It seems like on the surface the subjects are so different? Do you think your experience as a camp counselor working with children will help you with your future music pedagogy? Thanks, Ahleigha Colwell
Reply: Hey Ahleigha,
You mentioned that "welcome to the jungle" was your favourite band pieces, why was this? Could these reasons be applied to your future when you are picking repertoire for student? The reason that “Welcome to the Jungle” was my favourite band piece is because of the Baritone Saxophone part. I had been able to play both the melody of the piece as well as different harmonies. Normally a Bari sax part does not does not play the melody at all. Nor do they can play harmony, usually a Bari part is a mix of the rhythmic section, as well as the harmony part. So the chance to play melody all the way through a piece is something that I had really enjoyed. What draws you to want to teach music and science? It seems like on the surface the subjects are so different? The reason that I want to teach music and science is because, well I do not know for sure. Music I have always wanted to teach but for science it was not until high school that I had realized that it was something that I was good at. It was mainly chemistry and Physics that I was interested in. I guess because I was good in these subjects I had wanted to teach these subjects. Do you think your experience as a camp counselor working with children will help you with your future music pedagogy? No I do not think that my experience as a camp counselor working with children will help you with your future music pedagogy because my experience as a camp councillor really only showed me what age group the I had wanted to work with. But I do not know for sure until I begin to teach. Thank you for your really insightful and interesting questions. Haley Fine
Final Message: Hello Haley, Thanks for your fast response! I really liked learning these new things about you. Thanks again, Ahleigha Colwell
2. Original Message: Hello Haley, Thank you so much for your wonderful video, it was a thrill to watch! Some questions I have for you regarding your musical life are:
In what way(s) did you grade six teacher inspire you?
Do you believe that your band experience helped you grow as a musician? If yes, how?
What teaching styles from your previous teacher(s) would you like to incorporate into your own teaching methods?
Look forward to hearing from you soon, thank you! Marija Ristic
Reply: Hey Marija,
I am glad you had enjoyed my Who Am I Video.
In what way(s) did you grade six teacher inspire you? The way my grade 6 teacher inspired me would be the fact that she had shown me my love for music again. In grade 5 I had a music teacher that had what I though to have ruined music for me but when I had entered grade 6 this teacher (Mrs. Silver) she had shown me that there is much more to music then what I had thought.
Do you believe that your band experience helped you grow as a musician? If yes, how? I defiantly think that my band experience helped me grow as a musician because if I had not done the bands that I did or the amount of bands, I do not think I would have had the variety of music that I did which in turn would not have allowed me to figure out the type of music that I love to play. (JAZZ)
What teaching styles from your previous teacher(s) would you like to incorporate into your own teaching methods? Well there are different styles from each one that I would like to incorporate. From Mr. Hudspith his dedication to the technique of a piece, where as for Ms. Cher Alexander I would definitely want to include the way she had been able to make her express the music the way they had. She was always able to make you feel the meaning of the piece which had aloud us to express the piece much better.

Final Message: Hello Haley, Thank you for all of your thoughtful answers. It is wonderful to hear that your educators made such an outstanding and positive impact on your musical life! What you said about incorporating various teaching styles from different teachers into your own teaching methods was great to hear, and I hope you do so in the years to come! Thank you, Marija Ristic
